Liaison Agents for Distributed Crew Interaction with Autonomous Control

NASA Johnson Space Center

This is a SISM NRA2 grant, initially
administered by the Intelligent Systems Project.

Abstract

Crew time and attention are scarce and costly resources. This research project will develop software "liaison agents" that monitor and interact with crew in a context-sensitive and minimally intrusive way. The agents will augment situation awareness and remote commanding, reducing unnecessary crew interruptions, distractions, and errors. The software agents will determine which crew should be notified of operational events, the urgency and importance of the notification, and when and how the notification should be presented. They will also automate certain routine operations within otherwise manual crew tasks. This approach to adjustable autonomy builds up from fully manual systems, rather than down from full autonomy. Maintaining operational context when the agent is only occasionally in control is one of the research challenges. Investigators will study this within the Distributed Collaboration and Interaction (DCI) agent environment at JSC, for simulated life support system operations. The researchers will also develop a model of intrusiveness for adaptive multimodal and graded notification schemes in complex, dynamic, high-criticality NASA environments. This may be quite different from the office domains that have been studied previously.
